"Commander's Personal Log, stardate 80236.2: As of three hours ago, my appointment as Chief of Starship Engineering at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards has come to an end. Three hours ago, with Admiral Janeway and General Warhurst present, I took command of this ship that I've poured my life and soul into for the last seven years.
Tomorrow, the 1st MACO Interstellar Expeditionary Unit will begin embarking aboard the ship. The Churchill is enroute back from the joint-wargames in the Denorios Belt. The Patton will arrive as soon as it finishes being outfitted at Newport News Engineering Station with the latest in long-range sensor and communications gear. And the Earnhardt is finishing up spacetrials at the Bonaventure Proving Grounds.
Three hours ago I, Commander Jeremy Surak McKennin, became Commanding Officer of the First Deep Space Exploration Carrier Group as well as captain of the U.S.S. spaceQuest DSV, Deep Space Voyager, NX-94600."
For millenia the cold, dark, night of space has captivated the hearts, minds, and imagination of countless humans and other species around the galaxy. Together; we will forge a bright new path through that wilderness. For 300years, ever since humanity stepped free of its craddle and took to the stars, we've sent one craft, alone, into the void to explore.
Most times, it has worked and the crew came home safe. But enough times that hasn't happened. The Dominion War taught us the truth of something that we said was true, but never really practiced. That we are stronger together than we are individually. One ship cannot be made well to do everything exceptionally. A science vessel is not a medical ship. A ship from the Corps of Engineers is not a warship. Fate knows we tried... the Constitution, Excelsior, Ambassador, and Galaxy classes certainly tried to be exceptionally good at everything all at once. And more often than not proved to be capable of everything, but less fit for anything specific.
Now, we take the Vulcan proverb "Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations" as a mantra for exploration. Superbly outfitted, specialized vessels grouped together as a small, 4 or 5 vessel, "ship-group"; sent out to discover new life-forms and new civilizations, to chart safe courses through the unknown and explore the infinte ocean of space.
As captain of the spaceQuest and it's carrier group; we are its guardians... For amidst the darkness between the stars... lies the future.
